The client

Coastal Housing Group is a social housing provider that develops homes and communities across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot. The design brief To create a modern, open office environment, café and reception area that embraced flexible working patterns and retained the client’s corporate brand identity. Environmental considerations and energy efficiency were fundamental to the project.

Project delivery

To create a sense of open space in an otherwise busy office environment, Bbi created a fully realised, indoor countryside theme, complete with artificial trees, grassy areas and flower beds. Further feature pieces completed the quirky look and resulted in a working environment that was both practical and stimulating, bringing a smile to employees and visitors alike. The provision of the café and reception area presented a significant challenge as the building initially lacked room for both, and was overcome with the installation of a mezzanine floor to create the additional space. The ground floor itself was designed to blur the boundaries between the public areas and formal interview sections, allowing Coastal’s client assessments to be carried out in a relaxed, non-hierarchical environment. Energy requirements were addressed with the installation of a heat recovery system and LED lighting was used where practical to cut back on power usage. In addition, Bbi redesigned the top floor office space to facilitate easy conversion to residential use should future needs change. Gary Burridge from Bbi said: “This project was carried out with sustainability in mind at all times and our solutions led to the building securing a BREEAM rating of Very Good which was a key component of the clients brief.”
