ONS office interior

Office for National Statistics

Project

Multi site: London, Newport, Southport, Titchfield

Project value

£4.2 million | On going on contract since 1998

The client

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest independent producers of official statistics, and the recognised national statistical institute of the UK.

The design brief

To facilitate a refurbishment programme across four sites, including the complete strip out of multiple buildings and the re-stacking of more than 2500 staff.

Project delivery

PJE has worked with the Office for National Statistics for 15 years, during which time it has refurbished offices across the UK in accordance with the ONS Style Guide, which it also created and developed. The PJE team has supplied everything from interior design and space management services, mechanical and electrical design, multi-site project management and the installation of all fixtures and fittings.
By standardising the interior elements across all sites, PJE has helped to ease the transformation process across the organisation, and provided an invaluable estates management service to help identify specific requirements, control inventory and manage costs.
Debbie Barnett of PJE said: “This project really shows the scope of the work we do at PJE, from designing the ONS’s style guide, completely refurbishing multiple offices across the UK and facilitating the movement of staff.”

The problem of cold air circulating around the open plan reception area was overcome by installing two large curtain heaters and to cause as little disruption as possible, all work was carried out overnight or at the weekend.

Steve Lesbirel from Bbi said: “Quality and meticulous design was of the upmost importance here. We therefore used the very best materials to complete the high quality refurbishment, providing a stylish, modern reception area that can also be used as an informal meeting space.

“Carrying out the work out of hours was an added challenge, but one that we overcame, completing the project on time and within budget.”
